| CONSCRIPTED To contact us: webmaster@conscripted.com CONSCRIPTED is a Chicago area rock group playing original material that has been influenced by the usual suspects: everyone from Robert Johnson to Jack White minus the disco era and resultant 80's over produced stuff. Our music features the Riverwoods Sound which has been described as Post-Renaissance rock at its most pristine. We've also been described as post-garage, which means we're in an alley or driveway. Our brethren band is THE CLARENCE BAND which plays original and unmitigated rock of an alienated nature. Other influences: um... SCROLL DOWN FOR ALL SORTS OF INFO THE CLARENCE BAND PLAYED TO A GREAT HOUSE at Bill's on Friday, April 4. More live stuff soon. (www.billsbluesbar.com) CONSCRIPTED had a great time at Bill's on St. Patrick's Eve. Look for us to do something soon. We've just recorded some new songs which feature some of Mark's hot piano playing and Dewayne's superb drumming. CONSCRIPTED Personnel: Dewayne Quirico: Our drummer and Bobby Fuller 4 alum. That's him on "I Fought the Law". Mark Glatt - 18 year old piano/organ wiz who always delights our crowd. He's just graduated high school and is at North Central College. Ellen Glatt - our elegant bassist & gardening goddess. Dave Glatt - guitar player trying to figure out if he is obsessed or depressed. THE CLARENCE GROUP: Guy Sheldon - Our Nordic 12 string bass player. Mark Eddie Glatt - drummer and uncle of Conscripted's pianist. Dave Glatt - same as above. CD's of both groups are available by e-mailing daveglatt@yahoo.com When are you playing next? Good question - piano playing Mark is off at college and drumming Mark is in Florida. But stay tuned to this space as sooner or later, we will strike again. We played several times in December at Bill's which is always fun. Total success at Bill's Blues on 9/14 (www.billsbluesbar.com) Harmonica Stud, Howard Levy, played with us on our opening song. It was very nice of him to do so & the crowd loved it. Great turnout... when & where will we play next? Hard to figure as keyboardist Mark is at college. But we'll be somewhere soon, I hope. Look for the Clarence Band to be somewhere soon also. new CD's: Cicada Summer featuring "I Love You A Lot Except When You're Wasted" also Dewayne singing on his song "Flyaway" Mark is hot on the piano and Ellen's bass is powerful. Clarence has just finished an EP called Guy Has Doubts. Check this for the ultimate version of "Death Cruise". Thanks to all of you who have come out to see us these past few months! Nice times at Bill's on 4/15. We played new songs: the long awaited Malibu Blues and I Love You A Lot Except When You're Wasted. The first song is a coming together of blues & surf music while the latter is a song with a message. Great success at Bill's on 3/11. Perhaps the highlight was the finale - an inspired "Black Cat Alley" featuring Mark's unrestrained piano playing. We'll be back there on a Sunday night in April - we just don't know which one. Stay tuned and we'll figure it out. Big news is the new EP titled Sinus Time. Five songs, including one written by Mark and one by Dewayne. If you see us at Bill's, they'll be on sale for a modest $5. If you don't see us at Bill's, they'll still be on sale. And you can hear a bunch of new songs, including our newest which is still nameless but is a coming together of early 50's blues & surf music. It had to happen sooner or later. Many thanks to all of you who braved the cold on Presidents' Day Eve. We did 17 songs, including new ones "Calm" & "Swiss Blade Blues". The cool things about "Calm" are a) it is calming and b) it only has one line that gets repeated 17 times, making it easy to memorize. (Do you notice a duality about 17? In many societies, it is a magic number.) Thank you to the Bill's crew: Nancy, Debbie, Bill & Norman. 12/3 - Conscripted rocked Bill's Blues (www.billsbluesbar.com) with the help of Ikea-ettes Leasan & Kira. Very nice turnout with many new faces. Highlights: Our first time playing "I Fought the Law" and Mark's new song "Always Monday Morning". Many observed that pianist Mark was "excellent". 11/26 - The Clarence Band was at Bill's and total rock prevailed. We finished a 4 song cd and are about to work on another, I hope. Great night for Conscripted at Bill's on 10/8, the highlight being an unrestrained IKEA Girls perpetrated by a zealous group of IKEA - ettes. You know who you are and we thank you for being you. We also thank Kira, Norm & Bill. CLARENCE NEWS: Our 4 song CD is just about done. A very nice guy, Kevin, filmed us at his garden party a few weeks ago & youtubed us doing the Standells' song Dirty Water. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjPu9fqut_U Another triumph at Bill's for THE CLARENCE BAND on 9/24. So many nice people came out. Many agreed that the highlight was a rousing "Spirit Never Dies". COOL TIMES IN WILMETTE: On 9/8, CONSCRIPTED & THE CLARENCE BAND appeared on the same stage at the effervescent Nancy Emrich Jones's Lilfest. (www.lilfest.com)Total rock prevailed and The Clarence Band almost finished the last set before the cops came. Fittingly, we ended after Round & Round with its memorable and true to life verse: Was 12 o'clock and the place was packed When the police knocked, those doors flew back. Thank you to the many cool people who showed, especially up & coming saxist, Dan Toporek. THE CLARENCE GROUP: Guy Sheldon - Our Nordic 12 string bass player. Mark Eddie Glatt - drummer and uncle of Conscripted's pianist. Dave Glatt - same as above. 8/13 at Bill's - a very nice night with many new faces in the audience. The Bill's people (Debbie, Norm & Nancy) were cool, as always. Bartender/teacher Kira along with Leasann provided the chorus for IKEA Girls and what a job they did! Ellen's bass playing was smooth and lively. Despite the pain of a sore back, Dewayne drummed remorselessly and Mark debuted his new song, Done It All. He's working on another new song, I Want to be Cool, a (an?) homage to the silliness of teen class structure. Look for it soon. MUCH HAS HAPPENED and much more will. Our brethren group, who is searching for a name, played at Bill's Blues Bar on 7/9 to an ecstatic crowd. They (we) will be back there on 9/24 (I think). When Conscripted plays there Sunday, 8/13, we will have a new song (I hope). Why do we play at Bill's so often? Because we love Bill, Debbie, Nancy & Norm. And in their own way, they love us. TOO COOL - That's all I can say about playing at Bill's Blues Bar on 6/18, though upon further reflection, I could say more. We had a great crowd, with many local luminaries, including Cynthia Plastercaster, elite photog Jim Newberry & noted educator, Lindsay Koopman. Along with Soundman Supreme Norman, hosts Nancy, Bill & Debbie made the night extra nice and kept the cooling beverages moving at a respectable clip. But let's not forget the music - Ellen played great bass, Mark wowed the crowd with some breakaway keyboard action & Dewayne - who waited until after the performance to tell us it was his birthday - drummed with total power. As you know, he always does that. We debuted Joe the Goiter and closed with a rousing IKEA Girls, aided by Ikea-ettes Sara, Lindsay & Malaika. We return to Bill's soon - stay posted! Our brethren band, HOOS CLARENCE is playing there 7/9 at about 10 pm. What a summer! A RETURN TO BILL'S on 6/18 We're back at Bill's Blues Bar (www.billsbluesbar.com) 1029 Davis in Evanston, just east of the post office at 10 pm, which probably means 10:30. Expect big things, including the global debut of our new song "Joe the Goiter". BIG LIQUID SUCCESS at BILL'S BLUES BAR on 4/30! After a layoff that had some of us wondering just what is going on out there, we of Conscripted had a great night at Bill's. (www.billsbluesbar.com) Great drumming from Dewayne and great piano playing from Mark, to whom some compared to a young Steve Winwood. The numerous crowd was supportive and loving as were hosts Nancy, Bill & Debbie. Nancy even joined in on IKEA Girls. Let's not forget Sound Man Norman, a veteran of many Rock Wars. We're going to return but we don't know when so stay tuned. OLD STUFF: Yes, Conscripted rides again, though if gas prices go much higher, we'll be walking to Bill's Blues Bar in Evanston on Sunday, April 30. We're supposed to start at about 10 pm. (www.billsbluesbar.com) is at 1029 Davis, just a bit east of the post office. Bill's has a very nice stage & sound system and the aforementioned proximity to postal services is a nice plus, especially if you want to mail a letter complaining about gas prices to your congressman. They love to hear from us - feel free to complain about other issues or lack thereof. Anyway, we have some new songs to go along with the old so even if you don't feel like mailing anything to anybody, join us on the 30th. Perhaps you can sing on IKEA Girls. Michael Columbia is(are?) doing really well and are spending most of April on tour. This is real old stuff: Well, we played the night before the night before Christmas at the Dave's Italian Kitchen Christmas Party and the good times flowed like free beer and wine. Incredible turnout by some of our favorite people: Cynthia Plaster Caster, Jim Newberry, the debonair David Zornig and Terry from the Guitar Works. The Riverside Riders, consisting of Andy, Zack, Mark and Matt (filling in for the vacationing James) rocked, in a word. Then Conscripted played - so much fun! We closed with IKEA GIRLS and were joined by a fresh batch of IKEA-ettes culled from the crowd. Clarence and the Nightraiders played and that too was fun especially as we had practiced before hand. The grand finale was Michael Rodriguez, a confection of Michael Columbia's David & Dylan joined with all star traveling bass player, Griffin Rodriguez. They really sounded good and many are waiting for their next appearance. And many are waiting for Conscripted's next appearance. Stay tuned. THE ALBUM IS DONE! (sort of) It's called The Riverwoods Sound and it sounds really good. At least, the group thinks so. It has been officially, and I repeat, officially recommended by recovering groupie Cynthia Plaster Caster, truly our greatest honor. Visit her at www.cynthiaplastercaster.com. For album info, email daveglatt@yahoo.com. AND in honor of the the recent election and the new morality the results have embraced, we are working on a fundamentalist rock thing called Poetry on Acid. Check out Michael Columbia (at www.easternautonimic.com). They are sounding really powerful these days. Check out Griff's website for Icy Demons: www.icydemons.com. Like Michael Columbia, they are really good and even more importantly, they are interesting. Also, check out Fred Burkhart's website (www.burkhartstudios.com). He needs help. Seriously... Bios: Dewayne Quirico - played drums with the Bobby Fuller 4 on " I Fought the Law". Aside from being a Texas and LA legend, he is an avid golfer. Mark Glatt - sophomore at local high school who plays drums and piano. Played his first gig at Phyllis's at the age of 12. Mark has also been drumming with DHS's Riverside Riders. Dave Glatt - typical electric guitar player with a subdued yet off kilter manner. Enjoys playing loudly and hates creating web sites. Griffin Rodriguez - engineered our stuff. He was the bass player in the seminal 21st century jazz group Bablicon. He's constantly touring so we're lucky to have him record us. He is also the man behind Icy Demons. David McDonnell - (aka Diminisher or Eugene) also played with Bablicon. He's listed here because he came up with the name Conscripted. Also, we hope he'll play sax with us sometime. Currently playing with Michael Columbia and 4,000 other Chicago area groups. Recently visited Warsaw to work on his song "Wish They All Could Be Polish Sausages". He then went to Albequerque, described as the Poland of New Mexico. I'm not sure what that means. Dylan Ryan - drummer extraordinaire (there's no way this is spelled correctly) of Michael Columbia. Though shy, he is very popular with girls. Ellen Glatt - our elegant bassist in training. She joins in on the live shows. Sara Crawford - one of our favorite background singers who currently is trying to figure out what a stock index is. But aren't we all? Catie Campbell - joined in on IKEA Girls and Cocaine Lady. Will shortly be a famous actress. She's moving to New York, darn it. Dierdre Disch - sings on IKEA Girls. There is some debate as to whether or not her last name ends with an "e". Eggy, Fishy, Pippi and Poopi - really cool names of some elderly people we know. Abraham Lincoln - was our 16th president. He didn't play with us but I thought his name would look good here. OLDER NEWS: Thanks to the great crowd at Phyllis's Sunday, Aug. 29! A special thanks to stalwart Dave Zornig, a great American. Michael Columbia (visit them at www.easternautonimic.com) was very wonderful and exhibited new sounds of which you will want to hear more. We of Conscripted debuted Mark's new song which has yet to have a title. And our elegant bassist, Ellen, played some really profound bass notes with conviction & style. Of course, drum super star Dewayne was the real hero as he played like a demon. A great time was had by all. But where was Jamie?? Thanks to all who ventured into the bitter March wind to see us play 3/7 at Burkharts (www.burkhartstudios.com). Great turnout! We debuted Natasha's Birthday, which is, as you may have guessed, a birthday song. Once again, we did Ikea Girls, helped by Sara, Ingrid, Dierdre & Meghan. And thanks to Ayme Frye's Phoenix 68 who also lit up the stage. And even more thanks to Ayme's bass player who let us use his amps and to Ayme's drummer who is a good person & admirer of our drummer, rock god Dewayne Quirico. And no, we didn't play with Michael Columbia but if you want to buy their CD or find out where next they're playing, go to www.easternautonimic.com Big turnout at Burkhart Studios (www.burkhartstudios.com) on 2/15. As per normal, Michael Columbia (www.easternautonimic.com) played great, or should we say greatly? Either way, check out their website and buy their CD. We of Conscripted debuted two new songs: Cocaine Lady & IKEA Girls, the last of which we were joined by the IKEA-ettes, 4 young women who volunteered to sing background. And they were great -- thank you Sarah, Stacie, Kara & Catie (there's a really good chance that at least 2 of those names are misspelled). Great success playing at the Dave's Italian Kitchen Xmas party! Outstanding post-classical guitarist Tom Farrell opened things up and was followed by Michael Columbia, with bassist Griffin Rodriguez joining in. Michael Columbia's website: www.easternautonimic.com And you can buy their groovy new CD there. Then Conscripted played and introduced 2 new songs, Get Funked and Depressed. On the latter, we were joined by elegant bassist Ellen Glatt. Seminal 70's rockers Clarence and the Nightraiders then played and the night was concluded with 4 songs from Ex-Circus Convict. Thanks to the many who came out, including luminaries such as photographer Jim Newberry, softball player Amanda Kipnis, our friends from Cleveland Street and Cynthia Plastercaster. THANKS to all of you who came out to see us play at Phyllis's on 10/19. A great time was had by all. Though Dewayne was his usual god-like self, the highlight was Mark's inspired piano playing. We'll be playing somewhere soon (we hope). Stay tuned. And thanks to jazz studs Michael Columbia for whom we opened. |
